As spring turns into summer, spending a warm weekend at the beach transforms from a distant dream into a reality. Time spent at the beach here in Britain is filled with tasty ice cream, lively beach games and a slightly too refreshing dip in the sea. However, if you have mobility issues, the thought of spending the day at the beach can be daunting- what if it doesn’t have disabled access? What if there aren’t any facilities nearby? What if I can’t hire a beach wheelchair?
All of these questions are valid but thankfully, the UK boasts some of the best wheelchair friendly beaches in Europe. Here are four of our favourites:
Boscombe Pier Beach, Bournemouth
Bournemouth is a top beach destination here in Britain; with its warm microclimate and long stretches of white sand, it’s a family favourite during the summer holidays. Boscombe Pier beach in Bournemouth has excellent disabled facilities, including disabled access beach huts which feature charging points for electric scooters and hoists. You can also rent beach-worthy wheelchairs at Boscombe, and even ascend the nearby cliffs in wheelchair-friendly lifts, free of charge!
Broad Haven Beach, Pembrokeshire
If you enjoy a holiday in Wales, you’ll no doubt have visited Pembrokeshire and the surrounding coastlines. Famous for its expansive beaches and lush green clifftops, Pembrokeshire makes for the ideal holiday destination in the summertime. Broad Haven beach is one of the area’s best beaches and it’s accessible too! The sand is flat and even and you can hire beach wheelchairs to get around. Moreover, the water is calm and perfectly safe for a cooling dip.
With quaint fishing villages nestled amongst dramatic cliffs and surf-friendly waters, Cornwall boasts some of the most popular coastal areas in the UK. The county isn’t short on accessible beaches either; one of these beaches is Summerleaze Beach in Bude, located on the North Coast just over the border from Devon. The natural pool in the bay area makes for superb swimming and with friendly lifeguards on duty, you can spend the day splashing around without a care in the world.
Great Yarmouth is the quintessential British holiday destination on Norfolk’s golden coast. With traditional seaside fun and entertainment on the pier and a long stretch of sandy beach, a day at Great Yarmouth beach offers the full British seaside experience- and everyone is welcome. You can hire beach wheelchairs from the tourist office and spend the day cruising up and down the sand in the sunshine.
