Voice recognition

It is undeniable how much the technology industry has advanced in the past 10, 30 and 50 years. With each decade, multiple new and exciting inventions are made; smartphones and tablets are a common feature in many UK households, children are being raised alongside the indomitable social media, and a regular evening routine often includes unwinding in front of the television, Kindle, or laptop screen with your evening meal.

However, it can feel like the young, rather than the old, are more equipped and knowledgeable with handling the latest technological advancements, simply because they are brought up around technology and it is now a common occurrence in schools, universities and academic curriculums. Yet, this does not mean the technology is just exclusively produced and made for the younger user, infact, many technology brands are designed in mind for the older and elderly user, and can have a positive impact on their life. With this in mind, we have been inspired to write about five different innovative technologies that have impacted the older user.

Smart Watches and Wrist Trackers

The past 10 years have seen the rise of smartwatches and wrist trackers that have GPS locations and health and fitness software intact. These can be particularly helpful for the older generation as it can help them keep track of their location and of their daily health and fitness levels. For example, it can track how much daily sleep you are getting, the number of steps you take a day, and your heart rate.

Voice Recognition Software

Voice recognition software is slowly becoming more and more the norm in UK households. Your voice can orchestrate turning on the lights, choosing music and tv channels, and many more daily interactions that usually use a remote-controlled system. This is beneficial for the elderly as it removes the issue of scrambling around to find lost remotes or pressing the buttons.

Arthritis Friendly Gadgets

Arthritis is one of the leading illnesses that occur in the elderly, this is where the joints in the hands and knees can become inflamed - making it painful and difficult to move. Many independent companies have developed arthritis friendly gadgets that have thicker handles - making it less painful and difficult to clasp and hold objects. These can include cutlery, jar opening tools, makeup brushes and more.

Video Calling

Video calling is a great way to stay in contact with relatives and loved ones who live far away. This is great for elderly relatives if their family live far away or their friends have limited movement. Loneliness is one of the main issues that occur in the elderly - therefore video calling is a great way to stay connected.

Stairlifts

Invented in the 1920s, stairlifts have come leaps and bounds since their first primitive state. Stairlifts are great for elderly or less abled persons to be able to access the upper half of their home. Plus, stairlifts can now be fitted for a variety of different styles of stairs, no matter how narrow or curved.
